You’re Hot and You’re Cold

Transitional jackets and sweaters, the layering solution...

Jean JacketWe’ve lived in heavy sweaters and leggings all winter. It’s no wonder we welcome flirty dresses and teeny shorts with tees for spring and summer. Problem is, as the weather changes, there are often weeks or even months of transitional temperatures that are neither here nor there, not cold enough to wrap up in wool and not warm enough to don crisp linen.

During in-between, unpredictable weather, layering is key and nothing says layering like transitional jackets and sweaters. Over turtlenecks or tanks, the perfect weight of these outerwear pieces solves numerous weather dressing dilemmas.

One of the world’s most perfect transitional pieces is the denim jacket. Lightweight or even lined, the iconic style straddles the seasons, fits easily over sweaters or tees and adds panache. Menswear inspired suit jackets, often cropped or even double breasted are a treat over dresses and skirts or even jeans. The mid weight doesn’t add bulk but keeps the chill away. Think, too, of cardigan sweaters, long and belted or their cousin, the jersey kimono style with flowing arms and no closures. Women are also borrowing from the boys’ military trend, this season, with canvas army jackets sporting brass buttons and utility pockets.

And, once the weather finally decides to stay put and stay hot, transitional jackets and sweaters travel along easily for a night out, when temps always tend to dip.
